With school well underway and routines established, many people start thinking about the impending winter time cold. Hoping to ward off another season of high utility bills, thoughts turn to ways to make their homes more energy efficient. One of the easiest and most effective ways of doing so is to add more insulation to your attic. If you notice any of the following, it's a good indication that you need to do so as soon as possible.

1.      Your Utility Bills Are High
This is often the thing that prompts homeowners to search for ways to make their home more energy efficient. If your heating system is well maintained and not particularly old or inefficient and its ductwork is in good repair, it's probably not the issue. Instead, it's likely that your attic needs more insulation.

2.      You Don't Have Enough Insulation
Take a look around your attic with the intent of concentrating on the insulation. Can you see the floor joists? If so, that is a good indication that you need more insulation. The insulation should extend upward from the floor joists and be placed evenly throughout the entire attic. You shouldn't see any low spots or dips in the insulation. If you have foam insulation, it shouldn't be falling down. You also shouldn't see any signs of it settling. If you do, you'll need to have more added.

3.      There are Air Leaks
Determining whether or not your attic has air leaks can be a challenge. One place to start is where the vents exit your attic as well in the corners. Search for gaps that exist around any wires and pipes. On a windy day, hold your hand in these areas to see if you feel a draft. If you do, more insulation is needed.

ENERGY STAR has found during their research that most homes don't have enough insulation. This is especially critical in places like Minnesota where the winter temperatures are frigid for much of the season. The amount of air that the average home loses because of leaks is about the same amount that is lost if you left a window open all day, every day.
